It's a chain. Not much to say.

This is a standard sash chain, suitable for hanging old-style window sashes. It's made of a soft enough metal that it can be cut with wire cutters, but it's more than strong enough for the job. It has a brass look, that dresses up the window a little bit. Sash rope is readily available, but it's not good quality, and is too springy. Go with chain.

It's kinda tricky getting to the mechanism, but removing and replacing the chain and hooks and such isn't hard. And it's always cheaper to do it yourself.
